Match Report
Grampound 1-3 Newquay 3rds
4
January 2025
St Piran League
This was a difficult fixture to return to after a 2 week break but league leaders Newquay probably felt the same. Grampound were hampered by some unexpected cry-offs before the match but started well and might have been 2 goals ahead early on but for excellent saves from the visiting 'keeper from Gavin Boon. The first half was fairly even and Grampound were disappointed to concede a couple of very preventable goals. Grampound were aggrieved to suffer a few poor refereeing decisions before the break, especially when Hayden Bates was cut down by a foul on the edge of the penalty area. Grampound expected the defender to be shown a yellow card as a minimum but the miscreant did not even receive a public "talking to", much to the irritation of the home side.
After the break Newquay began to look the more tidy team as the conditions deteriorated but Grampound continued to pose a threat and with 15 minutes left pulled a goal back after looking about to score when Brendan Hitchens was pulled down and a penalty was correctly awarded. Kiall Maugham despatched the spot kick with a firmly hit shot low into the corner. With Grampound pressing even harder, the visiting keeper made a terrific save, flicking a shot over the bar to deny Grampound what looked like a certain equaliser. As Grampound pushed on and threw men forward in search of an equaliser the inevitable happened and Newquay scored a breakaway third to give them a more comfortable last few minutes.
