2024
St Piran League
Grampound begun there second
league game of the season at
home against Kilkhampton after a
very convincing 6-0 win last
week. Grampound went into this
game with high confidence and 2
new signings to bolster the
confidence they are carrying at
the moment. Grampound started
well, passing the ball around
and getting a feel for the game
and it wasn’t long before the
chances started flowing. Dean
Dunn was the full force of these
chance, having a well struck
curling free kick very well
saved as it was sailing into the
top corner. Kiall Maugham had
his first chance when he was put
through on goal but saw his
chipped shot hit the woodwork
when it looked to be a certain
goal. Grampound had corner after
corner but couldn’t seem to put
any chances away and begun at
times to get a little
frustrated. Grampound were
dominating possession and never
really looked in danger apart
from one or two half chances,
before Deano struck a shot from
outside the area which hit the
woodwork and bounced out but
fell to Gavin Boon who slammed
it in from 12 yards out to make
it 1-0 going in to half time.
Grampound very happy with 1-0 at
half time but it could have been
a lot more.
Second
half Grampound made a change in
formation and personal after
manager Lloydie and captain
Keegan Lloyd had a chat away
from the squad. Second half
started and everything changed
for the better and things
started to click, Lloyd started
to see the ball more but
importantly affecting the game
more by being aggressive and
direct which was missing in that
first half. This then started to
create more space for Boon and
Maugham in more forward areas.
Lloyd picked up the ball and
drove at the defence going past
2 players and slid a well
weighted pass through on the
left hand side for Boon who had
a keeper flying out to meet him
but managed to slot home a well
taken finish with his left foot
to make it 2-0 and give him his
second goal of the game.
Brilliant play all round and
exactly what the partnership
needed. Grampound
continued to hound the
opposition goal with shot after
shot where the keeper made some
very good saves. Nathan Penfold
then had a corner on the right
hand side swinging in a
brilliant ball where a header
was cleared off the line with
what looked like a hand? Ref
stopped the game to speak with
the linesman and the penalty
wasn’t given! Bizarre incident
but the ref’s decision!!
Kilkhampton keeper decided to
then rush his goal kick but
miskicked the ball with it
falling just short of the half
way line where Deano leaped like
an absolute salmon and won his
header directing the ball
towards the goal where the
keeper then bizarrely started to
come out of his goal as Boon
seemed to be through one on one
and the ball grazed the strikers
shoulder and dribbled in across
the line to put the blues 3-0 up
and give Gavin his 3rd goal of
the game, on his debut!!! What a
player! What a signing! The
blues then made a few changes
bringing Boon off with 25
minutes to go and replacing a
few other players to give our
very big and loyal squad game
time they all fully deserve.
Penfold then had another corner,
probably his 15th of the game
and again delivered an absolute
peach of a cross where it met
our big lad Chris Wenmouth who
leapt like the giant he is to
power home Grampound’s 4th and
put the game well and truly to
bed. Massive shout out for Lloyd
and captain Adam Williamswho
have clearly been teaching Chris
how to head a ball ! The blues
never ever looked in trouble and
the game was reffed very well.
Kilkhamptons number 8 (I think
it was) kicked out at Callum
Hennessy in the middle of the
and got a straight red which was
coming all game as he could not
keep his temper but the blues
stayed calm and let the ref deal
with the situation which he did.
Grampound made it 5-0 to wrap
up the game when Jamie Bennetts
picked the ball up on the left
hand side, cut in and delivered
what looked to be a lofted cross
towards the back post which
actually went straight in and
left the keeper stranded. A good
performance from new signing
Glen Patterson who looked solid
at the back and Boon up top who
bagged a hat-trick but everyone
put in a very good shift which
is what’s needed if we are to do
well. Match ended 5-0 and
Grampound move on to Tuesday
night with a game again at home
v Gerrans & St Mawes. Stay calm,
stay humble and take 3 points!!
