Grampound Veterans 2-4 Halsetown

22nd September 2019

Cornwall Veterans League Cup Round 1

Grampound started well for once and looked dangerous with every attack.  They went ahead after about 5 minutes when a visiting defender, under pressure, diverted a cross into his own net.  Grampound continued to press forwards and made numerous chances but failed to find the net.  Halsetown made a very occasional foray into the Grampound half and, to Grampound's surprise, equalised when a fine cross found a striker close in but unmarked.  A simple header found the net.  Grampound had more chances and looked well on top but were a little slack in allowing a break from a corner to Grampound to develop.  The Halsetown player simply ran past the Grampound defenders and finished neatly to go into the break a goal up.

More Grampound pressure at the start of the second half eventually paid off when a defender could only head a cross past his own goalkeeper.  With Grampound making numerous substitutions their cohesion started to go and the visitors took advantage of this, taking the lead again midway through the half when a strong shot was parried by the home goalkeeper and the loose ball was hit home by a striker who may have been in an offside position when the original shot came in.  Halsetown sealed their win with a late goal following a few rebounds inside the Grampound penalty area.
