Match Report

Delabole Utd 3-0 Grampound

29th February 2020

Duchy League Cup, Round of 16

Grampound began the game well on a pitch that could not have been heavier and playing against a howling gale.  The difficult conditions made it hard to move the ball easily and accurately but it was still difficult to defend and Grampound did this exceptionally well in the first half, restricting the home side to long shots which gave stand-in keeper Mike Bawden a bit of a comfortable time bearing in mind the game was played mostly in Grampound's half. Grampound even made a couple of presentable chances themselves in the first period which ended scoreless.

In the second half Grampound knew they had to pressure a shaky home defence and started this period well before being taken off by the referee because of a heavy hail storm.  Upon the return, Grampound looked as if they might force a goal but a breakaway saw them go a goal down after a bit of poor defending and some good fortune for Delabole. Minutes later a long cross by Delabole fell nicely and they extended their lead.  Grampound now pushed forward but in spite of creating some very presentable chances there were few occasions when the home goalkeeper was extended.  Delabole scored a third with another breakaway and the last kick of the game as Grampound threw caution to the wind to move into the quarter final after being pegged back for much of the game.  They did, however, take advantage of defensive lapses and converted their chances, something Grampound manifestly failed to do.
