Match Report

St Mawgan Res. 4-1 Grampound

8th February 2020

Duchy League

Grampound suffered from multiple withdrawals on the morning of the match together with one no-show at the meeting place before travelling.  The team was fortunate to be able to pull in a couple of veterans players at the last minute and Jordan Still, a Grampound lad who has not played for some time, and so at least arrived at St Mawgan with 12 players.

The conditions at the game were awful, a bumpy pitch and a howling gale blowing down the slope.  Grampound opened the scoring on about 20 minutes when Shane Weeks sidefooted a low free kick into the penalty area from Dean Dunn.  The goal was well-deserved as Grampound dominated the game with the wind behind them but the home side showed enough to make it clear that more than a one goal lead was likely to be needed.  Grampound did not really use the wind and slope well in the first half and St Mawgan began the second half by not allowing Grampound to get out of their half easily.  The equaliser came as they began to use the elements to their advantage and Grampound then had to dig in to keep in the game.  This was achieved until about 15 minutes from time when a couple of quick goals and another at the death gave the home side a comfortable win.
