Lanreath 2-0 Grampound
Saturday 23rd February 2002
Duchy League Division 3
Having had some good results of late, Grampound travelled to Lanreath with some confidence. Conditions were not inducive to good football and a downhill gale meant much of the game was compressed into the lower half ofthe field.
Grampound won the toss and elected to face the wind in the first half. Under enormous pressure, Grampound defended resolutely, and had two or three good chances on the counter. However, Lanreath were gifted the opener, when a long through ball, somehow found it's way past the hapless Anderson in the Grampound goal. Anderson, who has been outstanding of late, came to collect what should have been a simple ball, only to see it stick in the mud and roll through his legs.
In the early part of the season, Grampound would have folded after that demoralising incident, however, they continued to fight hard and went into the break with just the single goal separating the sides. Although Lanreath seemed to cope against the wind more easily than Grampound had, the second half was played to much the same pattern as the first. Unfortunately for Grampound, their pressure wasn't matched by their finishing, and they rarely troubled the Lanreath keeper. Indeed, as the half went on, and Grampound pressed for the equaliser, Lanreath looked ever more dangerous on the break.
With just a quarter hour remaining, a rare mistake by Ford in the Grampound defence, gave the Lanreath striker a gilt edge chance which he duly despatched with some venom. It effectively killed the game, and Grampound were left frustrated by their often inept efforts in front of goal.
At 2-0 it still leaves Grampound lots to do to avoid the relegation dog-fight, especially with Bodmin picking up valuable points with their thrashing of Tintagel.
