Match Report
Grampound 4-1 Foxhole
Saturday 8th December 2001
Duchy League Division 3
Having struggled for many weeks to put out 11 players for a match, Grampound sadly lost the services of its manager last week. Despite this, its lowly league position, and with a club in genuine disarray, Grampound managed to welcome Foxhole with a full compliment of, er 12! Having signed a new centre half in the morning, and playing the reserve goalkeeper in a centre forward pair with young Max Varnell, it again seemed a case of damage limitation. With the mature 80 years of the midfield pair of Chris Paynter and Ian Varnell, holding firm in front of the back four, Grampound defended resolutely for the first quarter, despite being under constant pressure. Richard Anderson had a particularly busy and strong game between the posts. To the surprise of everyone, Grampound went into the break a goal upa fter some opportunistic work from young Varnell and came out determined to hold onto their slender lead. Despite the continued pressure from Foxhole, Grampound continued to defend well and looked dangerous on the break. When 14 yr. old Daniel May came on to replace Harrison up front the game changed dramatically, with the sprightly young May grabbing two further goals. By the time the same Foxhole player had managed to score at both ends late in the second half the game was over, and Grampound ran out as deserving, if not surprising 4-1 winners.
